Known for their striking hues and feisty personalities, dottybacks are a standout choice for marine hobbyists. ✔ Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons (larger for more aggressive species).
✔ Temperament: Semi-aggressive; best kept single.
✔ Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care.
Dottybacks are carnivorous and thrive on a protein-rich diet:
High-quality marine pellets/flakes
Frozen or live foods (brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill)
Small pieces of seafood (squid, clam, fish)
Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions to maintain health and coloration.
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: <20 ppm
Dottybacks can be territorial, so choose tank mates carefully:
✅ Larger, semi-aggressive fish (dwarf angels, larger wrasses, nothing too big or agressive)
✅ Fast-moving fish (chromis, certain tangs)
✅ Avoid small, shy fish (gobies, firefish, other dottybacks unless paired)
Reef Safe? Most are reef-safe but may nip at small ornamental shrimp.
To reduce stress and ensure a smooth transition:
Float the bag in your aquarium for 15–20 minutes to adjust temperature.
Drip acclimate for 30–60 minutes to match water chemistry.
Release carefully (avoid adding bag water to your tank).
Note: Dottybacks establish territories quickly—provide plenty of rockwork for hiding spots!
